MINHDU Warns Bamenda Residents After Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has called for increased vigilance in Bamenda following exceptional rainfall that caused flooding in several parts of the city.

In a press release dated August 17, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development expressed solidarity with families and residents affected by the flooding, which disrupted daily activities and caused damage to property and infrastructure.

The Ministry says the government remains committed to improving drainage systems and strengthening the city’s resilience to flooding and other climate-related risks. It also pointed to the C2D Programme currently being implemented in Bamenda, which includes a major sanitation component as part of the urban infrastructure being developed.

But the Ministry says government efforts alone cannot prevent flooding. Residents, businesses and other stakeholders have been urged to respect town-planning and building regulations and to avoid construction in flood-prone areas, wetlands, drainage channels and riverbanks.

The public has also been reminded to obtain the necessary town-planning and building authorisations before starting construction projects.

The Ministry further warned against dumping household waste and construction debris into streets, gutters, streams and drainage systems, noting that such practices can block the flow of rainwater and worsen flooding.

Residents have been asked to report blocked drainage systems, landslides and other flood-related dangers to the competent authorities.

With flooding becoming a recurring problem in some parts of Bamenda, the Ministry is urging residents to remain particularly cautious during periods of heavy rainfall.

Administrative authorities, local councils, traditional authorities and community leaders have also been called upon to step up public sensitisation, monitoring and enforcement of town-planning regulations, especially in areas considered vulnerable to flooding.

The Ministry maintains that orderly and properly planned urban development is essential to protecting lives and property as Bamenda faces increasing climate and environmental risks.
