GCE Leak Scandal: Minister, Rights Advocate Point to Internal Failures

The ongoing investigation into the leakage of GCE examination papers has taken a new twist, with the Minister of Secondary Education, Pauline Nalova Lyonga, attributing the incident to failures from within the examination system.

Speaking in Yaounde, the minister rejected claims that the leak was orchestrated to discredit the Cameroon GCE Board or justify any attempt to take control of the institution. She stated that available information points to individuals involved in the handling and production of examination materials.

According to the minister, the leaked papers passed through institutions such as Press Print and individuals directly linked to the GCE Board. She described the incident as an internal betrayal and announced that investigations were ongoing to identify and sanction those responsible.

Her remarks come as concerns continue to grow over the impact of the scandal on candidates across the country.

Reacting to the incident, Dr. Agbor Nkeng, Coordinator of the Commission of the Cameroon Human Rights Centre in Bamenda, described the leak as an embarrassment for an institution that has organized examinations for decades.

He argued that responsibility lies with those entrusted with managing the examinations, noting that candidates could not have obtained the questions without the involvement of insiders.

Dr. Nkeng further observed that the postponement of some examinations may have affected candidates differently. While some students had completed their preparations and were ready to sit for the papers, others now have additional time to study following the rescheduling.

The incident has raised fresh questions about the security of examination materials and the measures in place to protect the integrity of national examinations.

As investigations continue, attention remains focused on the outcome of the inquiry and the sanctions expected against those found responsible for the leak.
