Bamenda Urban Crossing Project at 43% as Minister Inspects Works Ahead of Key Deadline

Cameroon’s Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, has carried out an inspection visit to ongoing road construction works in Bamenda, where the urban crossing segment of National Road No. 6 is now estimated at over 43 percent completion.

The visit, which brought together administrative authorities, technical experts, and project stakeholders, focused on assessing progress and aligning efforts ahead of critical deadlines. The Governor of the North West Region was represented at the outing, alongside municipal authorities and the project team.

Speaking during the visit, the Minister said the works are progressing satisfactorily, but stressed the urgency of accelerating key sections of the project. He noted that government has placed particular emphasis on completing priority stretches of the road in view of an upcoming Papal visit, which will require smooth accessibility within the city.

The North West Regional Delegate of Public Works, Nfor Cyprain, echoed this concern, stating that focus has been placed on fast-tracking works along strategic points that will be most relevant during the visit. He emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to ensure these sections are delivered on time.

On the technical side, the project supervisor outlined the current level of execution, confirming that works have surpassed the 40 percent mark, while indicating that progress remains steady despite operational constraints on the ground.

The Managing Director of the contracting company, SOCIETE BUNS, NJONG Eric, acknowledged the impact of the works on surrounding communities. He pointed to challenges such as water supply disruptions caused by damaged pipelines during construction, but reassured residents that dedicated teams are actively working to restore services.

He added that local subcontractors familiar with the terrain have been engaged to address these issues promptly, while also highlighting other difficulties, including access constraints in certain areas of the project corridor.

Minister Nganou Djoumessi, while thanking stakeholders for their commitment, called for greater collaboration between the administration and local populations, particularly in facilitating right-of-way clearance. He also appealed for public understanding, noting that the inconveniences experienced are temporary and necessary for long-term development.

The inspection visit ended with a renewed commitment from all parties to intensify work on priority sections, as the government pushes to deliver improved road infrastructure and urban mobility in the North West Region.
