Bamenda Celebrates World Environment Day 2025: "Beating Plastic Pollution"

buzzed with excitement as stakeholders in environmental protection gathered to showcase activities in commemoration of the World Environment Day 2025 celebrated every June 5th. The event, themed "Beating Plastic Pollution," same years theme brought together civil society leaders, government officials, and youths to raise awareness and find solutions to the pressing issue of plastic pollution in Bamenda and the North West Region at large.

The Chief of Service at the North West Regional Delegation of Environmental Protection, Dr. Agbor Ebai Maurice, highlighted the severity of plastic pollution in Bamenda. "Plastic is really a problem in the city of Bamenda," he said. "It blocks our waterways, causes flash floods, and leads to environmental hazards and health problems for humans and livestock."

Mr. Denis Kpue Mue the Regional Delegate of MINEPDED-NW while chairing activities, has emphasized the importance of collaboration and awareness creation in tackling plastic pollution. "We are doing awareness that the population should know what to do in case of plastic pollution," he added.

Shing Praise Waindia, Program Manager for Bright Light Projects in Cameroon,  "Combating plastic pollution is not a one-man thing," He said. "We need to collaborate and work together to find solutions." His organization has been working with other environmental groups to promote plastic recycling and reduce plastic waste.

Nsangou Rudolf, Director of Projects and Programs at The Greens, outlined his organization's efforts to manage plastics. "We have brought our decentralized system of managing plastics," he explained. "We collect plastics from targeted areas, shred them, and convert them to pavement bricks and other reusable materials."

The event featured practical workshops on upcycling and recycling plastics, including producing drying lines, nursery pots, and pavement bricks. Dzelamonyuy Christian Simoben, Team Leader of Eco Friendly Generation, demonstrated how to make drying lines from plastic bottles. Mbuh Hope Asobo, a University of Bamenda student, showcased how to create pavement bricks from recycled plastic.

The celebration aimed to empower youths with skills and knowledge to take the lead in fighting plastic pollution. "Youths need to take active roles in beating plastic pollution," Shing Praise emphasized. "They are the leaders of today and tomorrow."

The World Environment Day celebration in Bamenda highlighted the need for collective action to address plastic pollution. As the participants emphasized, every small action counts, and together, we can make a difference.
